Welcome! I thought I'd use this page to explain who I am and why I created this site.

I was a ferret owner. One of my ferrets had many many challenges to overcome in her life and, as a result, I had a crash course in most (but not all) of "what can go wrong with your ferret and what to do about it!" I am not a vet but I do have a little bit of a medical background. I did an internship in a spay and neuter clinic for cats and dogs, and I was an EMT for 8 years. Neither of these has anything to do with ferrets, but much of that experience helped.

I think the most important skill to have as a ferret owner is the ability to not take anything at face value. Just because a toy or cage or food or other product says it's safe for ferrets, don't assume that it is. Just because I say something is safe for your ferret, don't assume it is! Gather whatever information you can and then use your own best judgment. The same goes for choosing a ferret veterinarian. Not all vets are good ferret vets. Not all ferret vets are good ferret vets! Do your research, ask questions, and if you don't like the answers you're getting or if something doesn't feel right, get a second opinion. Just because a vet says they have experience working with ferrets doesn't mean they have GOOD experience working with ferrets!

I want you to leave this site and rethink just how safe things are in your ferret's world. Then I want you to be able to make whatever changes you need to make. Do you feel that you need to be better educated on ferrets? Go to my links page. Is their cage really safe? Fix it! I did. It wasn't that hard. I already figured out the easiest way for you to do it. What about your toys or bedding or food? Don't change them just because I said I do or don't like something. Really look at what you have and figure out if it's really as safe as you think it is. And don't assume it is just because nothing has gone wrong yet! Do you have an ill ferret? Don't give up! Find a better vet! Get another opinion. If your ferret has a kidney problem or could really benefit from Sub-Q fluids you CAN do it at home! It's not a big "doctor secret!" Whitney's life was extended by at least 2 years by getting Sub-Q fluids at home twice a day, every day, and it took me under three minutes each time.

There are so many things we can't control. So much information that still isn't known. But there are things you can do to keep your ferrets healthier and most importantly, SAFER. But many people don't do those things simply because they don't know any better. Because they never thought to question certain things, or didn't have the proper information. Or maybe there were times when they did know better but didn't know they could do anything about it.

Well... now you know!
