Why Modify Your Midwest Cage?

See that picture to the left? Can anybody tell me what's wrong with that picture? Can you say "LONG WAY DOWN?" I don't know about you but my ferrets slept hanging out of their hammocks and often awoke to a flurry of scratching which knocked them clear out of their hammocks and onto the floor! Can you imagine that happening from the height of the hammock that's hanging in the cage to the left? And what's with the shelves? And the spacing between the wires on the ramps? A ferret can not only fall from these but could hang as well!

This cage, contrary to popular belief, is not, was not, and was never designed to be a ferret cage. It is a cat cage. It was designed to be a cat cage. Adding 2 ramps, a hammock, and a couple of ferrets to the picture does not change that. Bottom line... this is a very unsafe cage for ferrets "as is."

As a matter of fact, MANY things sold with cute little pictures of ferrets on them are NOT safe for ferrets. Many "ferret products" were actually designed for other types of animals and are in fact quite dangerous for ferrets.

The New And Improved Version

There are many different ways to modify your Midwest (or similar) cage to make it safer for your ferrets. I had a Midwest cage that I bought at a yard sale that sat in storage for 3 years because I didn't want to use it the way it was and I couldn't figure out how to modify it without having access to a full blown tool shop.

Finally, I figured it out how to do it with a minimal amount of tools. I made these modifications with tape, twist ties, a drill, a cheap wire cutter, and a plexiglas/glass cutter knife. I also found places where I could order certain supplies I couldn't find around here, and have them precut and delivered to my door for very reasonable prices.

I loved the new improved version and so did my ferrets. There's more "usable" space for sleeping, playing and most importantly, for staying safe.
