Inserting The Floors

Wire mesh with sheet linoleum, plexiglas... use whatever will work best for you. I found it was best to cut the two additional floors 22.5" x 33.5". Otherwise it felt like the floors were being jammed in and pushing out the sides of the cage. If you don't intend to collapse your cage you can put the floors in place with c-rings (if it's a wire floor). Otherwise you could rest the floors across four 1/2" dowels 36" long that span the cage horizontally (The long way across the cage from side to side. -Positioning the dowels front to back got in the way of the doors). If you prefer, you can use something else in place of the dowels like metal rods or whatever works.

I positioned the first floor 3 rectangles high and the second floor 4 rectangles above that. To insert the floors:

  • Put the side dowels in place for the lower floor
  • Lower the floor in through the top
  • Rest it on the two side dowels
  • Then slide the middle 2 dowels underneath the floor.
  • Put the upper floor in the same way.

If you put all 4 dowels in place before inserting the floor (instead of sliding the middle two dowels underneath after the floor is in place) there won't be enough room to manipulate the floor and turn it at the proper angles to get it into position. I used twist ties to tie the dowels to the edges of the cage in a few places. This kept the dowels from sliding back and forth in the slots and made things a bit sturdier as well.
